The Rangers Set to Take FC Zenit St Petersburg in UEFA Cup Final
Friday, May 02, 2008
By Christopher White
Last night saw The Rangers and Zenit St Petersburg qualify for the UEFA Cup Final in Manchester on 14 May 08.
The Rangers' Come Back Special
ACF Fiorentina made 120 minutes seem like a long time for The Rangers last night at the UEFA Cup Semi-Final, squashing any hopes of the Glasgow club seeing Manchester for the championship on 14 May 2008. As The Rangers looked more and more like the Big Losers, the image came easy of thousands of let down Glaswegian fans in the streets of Florence surrounded by even more Florentines who weren't going to be easy on them.
But despite Fiorentina's dominance, they didn't score. Then came the draw. Then came the penalties.
While ego heroism ruins a team during usual play, it's everything when it comes to the penalty shoot out. And there is only one player that will be that hero: the keeper or the shooter. In last night's game, it was Rangers keeper Neil Alexander at one end of the Stadio Artemio Franchi field and Nacho Novo at the other.
The UEFA Cup Final wasn't what the Rangers were expecting this season, especially with their number one Allan McGregor out on an injury.
Zenit Shuts Bayern Munchen Down
The story was a little different between FC Zenit St Petersburg and FC Bayern M? last night at their home Petrovsky Stadium.
'I feel great,' Zenit star midfielder Anatoliy Tymoschuk said. 'Beating Bayern the way we did ? few people expected this.'
And the way they did is simple: they shut them out of UEFA in a 4?0 blow-out. Commentators across the board expected Bayern M? to not only have this game in the bag, but the UEFA Cup Final itself.
And fans all across Europe are going to be thankful that the commentators were wrong on this one ? they are in for a great final this year in Manchester.
